I've been working with Chris on various projects over the last 15 years. During this time we have become good friends and I take my music to Chris' studio whenever possible. Chris has co-produced a variety of my works, ranging from jazz to light pop music and world music. In addition to his superb engineering and producing skills, his proficiency on saxophone, percussion and back-up vocals is a great asset. I'm looking forward to working with Chris for a long time to come
We've been working with Chris for just under two years. He's helped us realize our vision for our first album, bringing us a NOMFA (Northern Ontario Music and Film Award) nomination for best album by a duo or group.
He has an incredible ability to pick out harmonies and melodies and getting the most out of any musician, even the relatively green ones. We have gotten excellent results with our first album. Chris always manages to find the balance and really showcase our tracks in their best light.
We couldn't be more grateful for his contribution.
"I've worked with Chris for over ten years as he's produced all five of my CD's. We've grown together as artist and producer.Chris exudes confidence in producing all styles of music from hip hop to punk; world music to folk-roots music. His musical training has equipped him with an amazing ear and technical aptitude. He is also the most patient producer I've ever worked with. His strongest asset is the ability to unlock the artists 'inner vision' Whether it's in the intimate studio setting in the city or the tranquil country studio, the vibe is always cool. After this many years between us, I can safely say he's not only my producer but a great friend." www.jayaymar.com
I've had the honour of working with the talented Chris Hess on three albums since the fall of 2010 - Jay Aymar - Passing Through (2011), Kick Ptarmigan - Trihornasaurus (2011), and my own album, Tony Nesbitt-Larking - Tony Nesbitt-Larking (2011). Chris brings many great skills to the musical table. He has a great knowledge of recording equipment, and is very skilled at the technical side of recording, mixing and mastering an album. His studio is of a professional standard, but is housed in a comfortable and pressure-free environment. Chris has a very sharp, musical ear, and knows how to make suggestions to the artist in a non-imposing way. He lets the artist be themselves, yet works to enhance and facilitate their creative vision. He has endless patience in the control room, and knows how to motivate the artist if they happen to find themselves in a recording rut. Chris also has lots of performing and recording experience himself, being an accomplished woodwinds player (sax, flute, etc.). This means that he can double proficiently as a session player and as an engineer, sometimes all within the setting of one project. Chris is also a really good guy, who is easy to work with, and who cares deeply about the projects he works on. I will be working with Chris for my second album, due out in 2012.
